Blacking out Racism in Poetry

A young black male sits immersed in a blackout poem

Blackout Poetry

I am . I thought I was

chestnut brown until one day

ambling late

through the school gates

this 6ft , 25 year old,

screwed up his pale face

and spewed,

“You black .

You dirty

Why don’t you go back home?”

I froze. Born in the backyard

of his Black Country

I thought I was already.

I don’t forget that .

The ‘ Black Country’ if any reader is a little bemused. The Black Country, is located to the North and Northwest of Birmingham, which includes towns like Wolverhampton, Dudley and Walsall.

Love this maybe one of my favourites of many.
