Surviving Hurricane Milton: A Poem on Climate Denial

Hurricane Milton

300 dump trucks frantically rush
To haul away storm debris.
There’s no time to lose;
Refuse to move & you die,
He said.

Plywood camouflages the windows,
The sandbags set. Diverted
Residents jam the highway,
Stuck in gas lines for miles.

There’s an unprecedented
War going on.

The camera zooms in on Andy,
Stuck in a vehicle with his family,
They shove a microphone
Before his mouth,
He shakes his weary head & said

He’s whiplashed from how fast
Climate deniers rapidly switch from
“It’s impossible for humans
To affect the climate,”

To

“This cat 5 beast barrelling down
Is manifest evidence
Of God’s wrath.”

Hot over the Gulf of Mexico,
The heat vacuumed
To the eye of the storm,
Rapid intensification
Of wind & rain surging

Through the seagrass meadows,
The mangrove forests; a fierce
Typhoon is about to claim land.

Nature has its own mind & in itself
Can make a heaven of hell,
A hell of heaven.
