Sorry Ukraine

A political poem reflecting on Ukraine’s struggle through war, shifting Western alliances and the uncertainty of great-power politics. It mourns a country caught between military ambition, geopolitical calculation and the unpredictable decisions of leaders pursuing their own national interests.

Sorry Ukraine,
We’ve been watching the news,
So much happening lately.

Zelenskyy humiliated
In the tense Oval Office.
Who thought it would
Come to this?

When tanks & troops
Amassed on your border
Some people were begging,
Can we talk?

The media claimed the natives
Prepared Molotov cocktails,
& the Russian occupation —
Would be a walk in the park.

The Maidan Revolution
Unleashed Putin’s rage.
He annexed parts of the East
& took Crimea.

As a random piece of debris floats
From the tower towards the crater,
It’s 2025
& now we are here.

Biden bellowed:
“We need firmness & resolve!”
NATO & the EU
Spoke with one tongue.

If the dictator grabs Ukraine
Then where next?
So they flooded the region
With high grade weapons & arms.

1 million dead & injured?
In an ideological war of attrition.
Putin despised NATO expansion
But nobody seemed to listen.

Who thought US policy
Would ever change tack? They
Impeached him, criminalized him,
Dodged death by an ear’s breadth.

Now Trump rules the roost,
& Ukraine’s aid paused.
The EU & Zelenskyy
Left with egg on their face.

An old Jamaican saying states:
While man plans, God wipes.
Make America Great Again —
MAGA comes first.

In this new turbulent era,
Transactional quid pro quos.
Sorry Ukraine —
Your firm ally turned foe.
