New Poem: The Pink and Lilac Umbrella

By One Comment1 min read
An open pink and lilac umbrella in a sunlit alley, surrounded by scattered cosmetics, papers, and a purple thong.

Pink and Lilac Umbrella

so much depended
upon

a pink and lilac
umbrella

discarded in the
ginnel

with an assort-
ment

of cosmetics:
a cheek

brush and purple
thongs

and unread
documents

all of it
stepped

over for a
latte

on a scorching
day

Pink and Lilac Umbrella

This poem is a reimagining of William Carlos Williams’s 1923 poem “The Red Wheelbarrow,” transposing the original’s pastoral simplicity into a contemporary urban setting.
