Paradise Lost
A poetic reflection on wildfire, displacement, and the painful uncertainty of those forced to leave home behind.
like a branded sword
the fire descended
and gathered ground fast
at the residents’ heels.
fierce as a comet
before them blazed
with torrid heat and vapor –
the Angels caught
lingering families
and led them
from subjected Plains
but some got trapped,
reports of missing
the lucky ones look back
beholding Paradise
but waving.
some draped tears
but wiped them soon;
the world is before them
but where to choose?
hand in hand
with wandering steps
and slow, off they go
their solitary way.
