aging gracefully

A tender and gently humorous short poem about ageing, memory and the warmth of family affection. In a fleeting exchange between an older relative and a younger woman, a moment of forgetfulness becomes an expression of love, patience and grace.

a sure sign
you’re getting old.

short-term memory loss,
a sure sign.

what did you just say?
she looked up at me

bemused.

her radiant smile
spoke:

forget it Uncle.
Happy Birthday!
