A brief and haunting lament for those caught in war and displacement, drawing on the biblical Rivers of Babylon to reflect on Iraq, grief and the loss of home.

by the rivers of Babylon,
families sat down and wept,
remembering loved ones
carried away from safety
as gunmen ran through town.
The Lord’s song could not
be sung, imposed to bow down
as lunatics screamed, “Raze it, raze it,”
in the name of God, but
not a sound could be heard
from the captives…
