A Vespertine Farewell

A quiet poem about the painful distance that grows between two lovers before a relationship finally ends. Set in the intimate spaces of a shared home, the poem captures the loneliness of emotional separation through small gestures, silence and the fading tenderness of love.

When the hair of your lover
Begins to cover his eyes.
In this vespertine hour,
Your solemn heart bleeds.

On the narrow staircase,
You brush past each other,
Carefully avoiding
Not to touch each other.

He bolts out the door,
You head to the single room,
To rest weary thoughts on
The lavender-scented pillow.
