Sibling Love & Art
A childhood memory of moving to a new neighbourhood, finding belonging, and discovering how family, place, poetry, and art can inspire one another.
The Scotlands Estate,
riding the big loud old bus.
New land, nervous feet.
Punks with wallet chains.
I run past big black boots fast;
they don’t see my grin.
Mama picks Keats Road.
Pirates paint the walls and
home smells like curried goat.
Friday! Ducks in sight.
I shoot them with my fingers.
“Bang! Bang!” No one cries.
Fists up, I am small,
but my heart’s a lion’s roar.
“This is MY place too!”

“I don’t like to tread on my brother’s toes, but I feel inspired.”
